When the Aviation Safety Network receives information about accident, they used access data to reformat and export it to MySQL database which is used by programs that support queries on ASN’s Website.

On the site, incident and accident data can be access by year, by airline,, by aircraft,, by nation, and in other way.

Information system integrate data about airline accidents. Data provided about accidents are detailed to the extent that users are able to understand and determine the trends in airliner accidents.

Users of the information provided are able to know the safest locations on airplanes per accidents.

Information is data has been processed for relevant use. A good information according to my reading has the following characteristics:

1.Accurate- thus correct and completed data

2.Timely- always produced in time for intended use

3. Relevant- well related to needs and demands

4. Just Barely sufficient- information should be enough to satisfy needs

5. Worth it Cost- information is expensive. There must be an appropriate between information and the value

it has.

Hardware – Software – Data – Procedures – People.

Information system can be automated, manual or semi-annual.

Another new concept that caught my attention in class was on how communication lines are laid on the floor of the oceans across different continents. A visual look  of the idea showed how much the world in interconnected. Ocean cable lines provides faster communication than the Satellite. This is because communication are carried up to satellites above and then sent back down to its destination.

The internet can be compared to the post office. The process involved in sending a mail through the post office is similar to how the an email is sent to a recipient. The only difference is that email systems are faster than the post office. I thought this was a phenomenal analogy that given in class discussion.

1. The Knowledge I have gained about hardware and software has been of great value to me. First of all, I have come to understand the difference between hardware and software. Hardware are the physical components of the computer( disk, CPU, Monitor, Mouse, Keyboard etc) and software is the program installed in the computer. A set of instruction that runs the computer. Examples of Software excel, word, access etc.

My understanding on hardware and software will aid in me in the future to select an appropriate computer for the right use. With my knowledge, I will be able to select a computer based on memory size ,speed,program based on my employee need. When buying a computer a computer, one of the first thing I would consider is the speed which is measured in hertz.The programs and the memory size will also be an important factor in my buying decision in the future.

Virus is an unwanted program that attacks a computer,replicate itself and cause a serious damage to computer programs. With my knowledge in computer, I would make sure that quality anti-virus software are installed and updated frequently to avoid damages to business computers. I will also ensure that all computer systems are integrated in such a way that updates on anti-virus programs are installed. I will also ensure that employees receive training on the use of computers at work with emphasis on security,data exchange and virus etc.

2. I would choose a database when large volumes of data are processed in the business. I will definitely have a database where I can easily access and track information. I would use spreadsheet when I am performing simple projects or task at work.

Personal DBMS are designed for smaller applications. They are usually used for personal applications that involves fewer than 100 users. Usually, there is a single user to these applications. Example is student database for a university professor.

Enterprise-Class DBMS is used to support large volumes of amounts of database. It separates application programs and DBMS. They support users and different database applications.

One could get by with  forms, reports,queries under personal DBMS. The single user can create any of these task based on what information he or she might need. When a database involves multiple users processing the database, there might be the need to hire someone to manage the activities of the user to prevent possible data conflicts and accurate flow of results and information.

3. When computers in the department are located in single geographical area, LAN would be able to connect network where all the computers in the department will communicate with another over transmission lines.

Wide area networks connects computers at different geographic locations. Example will be connected computer network throughout BYU campuses in Hawaii, Utah, and Idaho.

A network of lines leased would be appropriate when a business want to broadcast a message to a large audience in a wide  and different geographical areas throughout the world.Example LDS General conference.

HTTPS:// is used when there is the occurrence  of bulk of communication. Employees are encourage to use https:// so that large volumes of communications will be secured and not be discovered.

An organization can prevent employees from accessing a particular website by installing firewall(Access Control List).

VPN (virtual private network). It uses the internet to create an appearance of private  point-to-point connections.VPNS are appropriate when there is constant interaction between employees and customers.

Emails and IM are protected by encryption when messages are sent over a public network. Encryption prevents a third party from reading messages that are sent over public networks.

4. IT will help me in the future to understand how computer system works in a business. I would be able to determine what kind of IT products will be necessary in the department I work at. Also, knowledge about IT will help me to make good decision for the benefits of employees which in the long run have a tremendous effect on productivity.

Career Assignments:

Two Jobs that are involve significant computer skills are Accountant and Financial Analyst. These are jobs are not strictly in the computer in the computer industry but it involves a great level of computer skills to work in these fields.

As that moment, I am taking my computer classes seriously so that I can get the needed knowledge on how software programs runs in accounting and financial information systems.  I also need to understand the data and security concepts in information system. This will aid me to understand how computer programs in accounting and finance works. I also need to abide by rules that guides internet usage and communication.

LAN(local area network) connects computers that reside in a single geographic location on the premises of the company that operates the LAN. A university internet system may be an example of LAN network that provides internet access to students on campus. Students are able to connect these networks with their laptops to enable them to perform their school-related activities.

Firewall is a computing device that prevent unauthorized network access.  Firewalls can be a special-purpose computer, or it can be a program on a general -purpose computer or on a router.

I will enlightened more on data communication after class discussion. Is it really important to understand these terms in about networking. In my view, it is important because it is a common language that is used in the IT world. Your response and ideas are welcome to the topic.

Excel has over a million rows where data can be inserted for later usage. From our discussion in class, database management has become a very important field in every business.

There was also a discussion the difference between a database and a spreadsheet. Database contains large volumes of data for usage in the future while spreadsheet is used to perform simple data computations and storage. Also structured Query Language is an international standard language for processing a database. Metadata are data that describe data. Microsoft access is a good example.

Database is a central unit where information is stored. The purpose of a database is to keep track and retrieve information.

Information is an expensive material to most businesses.Most businesses keep their information in database to help them to manage business operation efficiently.There are three major database system; Access and MySQL developed by Microsoft, Oracle is developed by Oracle Corporation,DB2 from IBM.

Database Administrators manages the program the creates and processes the database. Expertise in such fields are always in high demand.

Another interesting point to know is database applications. It is a collection of forms, reports, and application programs that processes a database. Any database could have more form of application to run it programs. These are major points I came across in my reading. I will publish a post discussion response to enhance the points that have been enumerated above.

The question is does it matter which database program a company chooses? Should speed and security be a prime factor in selecting a database program?

A data is entered into the computer through the key board as a command. The information is sent to the Central Processing Unit(CPU) to process the command int a relevant information. The CPU after process send the results the monitor where it is displayed. The display are can be stored on a disk or it usually stays on the RAM. This was a relevant concept to me.

Another thing is even computers can serve as a good servant to our needs, it has vulnerable. Computers can be infected with a virus. A strange program that negatively infects computer components such as the disc or processors causing severe damage to it. Virus in computers replicates itself and cause more damage if the problem is not fixed.

One of the best ways to fix a virus in a computer is to reformat your disc or use a strong anti-virus program. The anti-virus according to our discussion should be current and updated so that it can perform well.

Companies whose computers have been infected by virus have lost several millions of dollars, so as a precautionary measure, protect your computers from virus and other attacks.

The question I would like to pose is which of the operating systems less vulnerable to virus attacks and is more efficient and effective? Your answers and comments are welcome.

On a side note, we always hear something in the news about Operating System. There are four types of Operating systems in the world. Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac OS. Windows have about 95% market share in the world. Linux is next and then Mac OS which is also popular with graphical users. And Unix is for scientific purposes.

As the manager of the company, you will need to understand the different operating systems. Knowledge about the different operating systems will aid managers to make a wise decision on which best fits the interest of the company. It would be a blunder for a manager to use a unix operating system in a general business model.

Also one of the most important things to bear in mind as a manager is virus.Virus comes in different forms such as worms, trojan horses, etc. These are deceptive elements that could damage an entire computer system.

Knowledge about information is vital to development and response to crisis. Without the aid of IS, it would have been difficult to locate areas that needed immediate rescue assistance during Hurricane Katrina. IS made it possible to locate such areas. Most companies were about able to develop a strong contingency plan to respond effectively to crisis.

Should managers consult expertise in information system before they can upgrade their companies or should take a unilateral decision if they are well abreast with information system and technology.
